What it is
What an ultrasound does, explained in 30 seconds.
An ultrasound probe sends sound waves far above human hearing into the body and listens to the echoes. Different tissues reflect sound differently, and the echoes become a live image of organs, vessels and tissue. No radiation is involved, which is why ultrasound is used even in pregnancy.

No. Warm gel and gentle pressure from the probe; the transvaginal scan is uncomfortable for a moment at most.
